Commute Times From Popular North Houston Suburbs

One of the most common questions people ask when relocating to the North Houston area is: “How bad is the commute?”

The good news is that many North Houston suburbs offer a balance of larger homes, master-planned communities, and reasonable access to major job centers like Downtown Houston, The Energy Corridor, and the Texas Medical Center. However, commute times can vary depending on traffic, your exact neighborhood, and when you leave for work.

On average, Houston commuters spend about 29–31 minutes traveling to work, though suburban commutes can be longer during peak rush hour.

Here’s a look at typical commute times from several popular North Houston suburbs.

The Woodlands

The Woodlands is one of the most desirable master-planned communities in the Houston area. Known for its trees, parks, and strong amenities, it attracts many professionals who commute into the city.

Typical commute times:

  • Downtown Houston: 45–60 minutes during rush hour
  • Texas Medical Center: 60–90 minutes depending on traffic
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport: 20–30 minutes

Most commuters use I-45 or the Hardy Toll Road, which can provide a faster and more predictable drive during busy hours.

Spring

Spring sits just south of The Woodlands and offers convenient access to I-45, the Grand Parkway (99), and the Hardy Toll Road, making it a great option for commuters who want to be closer to the city.

Typical commute times:

  • Downtown Houston: 30–40 minutes
  • Texas Medical Center: 40–55 minutes
  • IAH Airport: 15–25 minutes

Many buyers choose Spring because it offers more affordable housing while still providing relatively quick access to Houston job centers.

Conroe

Conroe has seen tremendous growth in recent years thanks to new construction communities and access to Lake Conroe. Homes here are often larger and more affordable compared to neighborhoods closer to Houston.

Typical commute times:

  • Downtown Houston: 50–70 minutes
  • Texas Medical Center: 70–90 minutes
  • The Woodlands job centers: 20–30 minutes

The commute depends heavily on how close you live to I-45 or Highway 105.

Kingwood

Known as the “Livable Forest,” Kingwood offers wooded neighborhoods, golf courses, and close proximity to Lake Houston.

Typical commute times:

  • Downtown Houston: 30–40 minutes
  • Texas Medical Center: 45–60 minutes
  • IAH Airport: 15–20 minutes

Kingwood commuters typically use Highway 59 / I-69, which provides direct access into downtown.

What Actually Impacts Your Commute

No matter which suburb you choose, a few factors can significantly affect your drive time:

1. When you leave
Even shifting your departure by 30 minutes can dramatically change travel time during rush hour.

2. Access to major highways
Living closer to I-45, Highway 59, Beltway 8, or the Hardy Toll Road can save significant time.

3. Your exact neighborhood
In large communities like The Woodlands or Conroe, the distance just to reach the freeway can add 10–15 minutes to your drive.

The Bottom Line

North Houston suburbs offer excellent lifestyle benefits—more space, strong schools, and beautiful communities—but commute times are an important factor when choosing where to live.

The best approach is to consider:

  • Where you work
  • What time you typically leave
  • Which highways are closest to your home

If you’re relocating to the Houston area, I often help buyers map out commute routes before they choose a neighborhood so there are no surprises after moving.

Thinking about moving to North Houston?
I’d love to help you find a neighborhood that fits both your lifestyle and your commute.
